The Kids Are Not Alright

One odd thing I've noticed in readings for my education courses is the terminology used to describe the "lower status peer groups." Was there a whole different youth culture than the one I grew up in, or are some education theorists getting hosed? It's almost like reading an account of human youth documented by space aliens. Some of my favorites so far include:

Dirties
Druggies
Gothics
Heavy Metals
New Wave Asians
